One hour fire rated glass blocks are different from standard glass blocks in several ways. The one hour fire rated glass blocks are UL tested and certified to be one hour fire rated. Plus the face on each side of the one hour fire rated glass block is ½ “ thick whereas the face thickness of standard glass block is ¼ “ making them much heavier than the standard glass blocks.
Once a glass block is installed it is very hard to tell if it is one hour fire rated or just a standard glass block so it is very important to check the boxes when they are being installed. The boxes of one hour fire Rated glass blocks will have a “60” or “Thickset 60” on the label. All the more reason to use a professional glass block installer on your project.
The one hour fire rated glass blocks are available in 3 different patterns.
- The Spray 60 has horizontal lines on one side and vertical lines on the opposing side to give a totally obscure pattern.
- The Nubio 60 is a wavy pattern not as obscure and the Spray but still somewhat obscure.
- The Clarity 60 has no pattern to it for use in a location where visibility is not an issue.
All 3 allow similar light transmission. All 3 are installed in the same manner whether they are going into brick, hardi or stucco.
In residential construction if the plans show an exterior wall closer than 36” to any property line, all materials in that wall must be made of one hour fire rated materials. This applies even if it is a vacant lot next door. Brick and Hardi Board easily pass this one hour mark. There are two options for windows in this firewall. One hour fire rated glass blocks installed with fire rated waterproof glass block mortar or One hour fire rated fixed and operable windows. Both should be installed by companies qualified and familiar with this sensitive type of work.
